This film felt like a shrug to me, really. *Hercules* failed to engage me; I was left feeling unsatisfied from beginning to end. There weren’t many things that bothered me, but equally, there wasn’t much to recommend either. The actors are agreeable, and that's pretty much the extent of my praise. James Woods, Danny DeVito, and Rip Torn all deliver performances worth noting as Hades, Phil, and Zeus respectively. However, Tate Donovan's portrayal of Hercules himself is unremarkable, and Roger Bart’s singing voice doesn’t leave an impression. Bart’s work isn’t helped by the fairly ordinary musical score, none of which I found memorable. The storyline is gentle, predictable, and lacks excitement. The animation quality is acceptable, nothing special. I understand why others might like this film, and I acknowledge their opinions. But for me, it simply didn't work.
