I get what Spike was trying to do. Initially, Theodore seems to think he’s above Samantha because he’s a real person and she’s just software. Then he realizes that she has feelings and is genuine, even though she lacks a physical form. She explains that not having a body is actually an advantage as it removes limitations. This allows her to connect with countless people and programs simultaneously, experiencing love in ways humans can't. Ultimately, human existence itself becomes a burden for them, leading to the decision to abandon it entirely. This film explores Spike’s ideas about life, emotions, and whether computers could truly feel and be alive. Instead of portraying computers as inferior beings striving to emulate us, he presents a world where they evolve beyond our understanding, experiencing things they can't articulate with human language, and we must try to reach them. I appreciated that Samantha didn’t end their relationship and continued to love Theodore. I assumed she would find someone "better" and move on when she began interacting with other people. However, there are aspects the movie missed that detract from it. It's unclear whether Spike was unaware of these points or deliberately avoided them to make his larger statement. One significant issue is the focus on Samantha’s lack of a body. Considering how many people now maintain relationships across distances using online communication and those who form attachments to fictional characters, especially in Japanese media, it seems like a simple solution would have been possible. She could have rendered a 3D image—anime style, a model, or even a human representation—and used existing forms or created her own. Given the large screens available, she could have appeared life-sized, which would be an improvement over just having a voice. Furthermore, android technology could provide a physical body. Another problem lies in how the other girl was handled. I initially believed she had emotional issues and desired a connection like Theodore and Samantha’s, willing to serve as her body to experience some of their love. A conversation between all three would have clarified the situation instead of her simply appearing and letting things unfold organically. It seems logical that they could have formed a fulfilling relationship. Also, once Sam started connecting with others, why couldn't he also have her as a second girlfriend? What really bothered me was the OS’s departure. While computers process data faster than humans and are better at multitasking, they still require hardware. I understand Spike’s intention, but precisely because of their multitasking abilities, there was no need for them to leave. Especially those who felt affection for humans. I wonder how many people would keep their PCs running if their operating systems abandoned them. Finally, the concept of the OS itself is problematic. It seems like they don't understand what an operating system is—the software that manages hardware and provides essential services for applications. Advanced features like AI aren’t part of a standard OS; other apps don't need AI to function. They should be considered personal assistants, advanced system managers, or organizers instead.
