The Academy should reconsider limiting Best Picture nominations to five, a practice that used to align with the number of Best Director nominees. Having ten is too broad and lets films like "Her" sneak in. Spike Jonze would be better off focusing on projects written by Charlie Kaufman. “Her” feels ordinary and lacks inspiration. It's noticeably weaker than movies such as "Adaptation" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," and only slightly preferable to John Malkovich’s interactions with Siri. The film doesn't really offer much insight into digital addiction, imaginary friends, internet pornography, technological advancements, long-distance relationships, fantasies about control, or modern romance. Joaquin Phoenix is a dedicated performer who puts in a lot of work on this unremarkable project—a waste of his talent. Jonze tries to explore all the possibilities presented by his central idea, but ignores other reasonable outcomes. It’s strange that Theodore was the only one with an operating system girlfriend. This software should be incredibly popular, like iPhones are now. Samantha, as a sophisticated OS, can process data very quickly, but seems to experience human emotions slowly—like molasses. It's almost as if there was a compromise; the more emotional she becomes, the less intelligent she appears. You could call it a Spock effect. Most importantly, why didn’t Samantha create a digital face and body for herself? Perhaps Jonze intentionally limited her abilities to illustrate that genuine romantic love isn’t about physical attraction. However, there's not much to think about beyond this simple statement. It’s no more complex than rewatching old episodes of "I Dream of Jeannie" (just substitute a smartphone for the magic bottle). While I was watching “Her,” my mind wandered, searching for a more engaging story than that of a solitary man falling in love with a voice on his computer. What if, instead, a dying wife’s brain were transferred into an operating system, and then a computer virus erased her? Perhaps the Academy could split the ten Best Picture nominees into two groups: five big-budget films and five smaller independent movies (with budgets under $25 million), starting with one type of film and ending with the other. Even so, I’m not convinced “Her” warrants any recognition at all.
