I wish they had chosen a more direct translation for the film’s title, given how it portrays “Marie’s” (Laure Calamy) determination to ensure her son "Adrien" (Nissim Renard) can attend cooking school. She manages adequately working as a sex worker in Strasbourg, but when his chances depend on a single private institution costing €9000 per term, she is forced to move to a more reputable brothel where her income could be higher, even though she has no control over who she serves! The story that unfolds is a very relatable depiction of the sacrifices parents make for their children. It isn't overly explicit; much of the sexual activity occurs off-screen—yet it still provides an intriguing look at a woman who genuinely finds satisfaction in her profession. In fact, she and her coworkers actively protest laws intended to penalize those who use their services. There’s frequent snowfall there – and strangely, that rather cold atmosphere, as they share a single bed in her small apartment, helps to highlight the complicated but ultimately affectionate bond between them. Calamy is excellent; her performance feels authentic, and at times you can really sense her worries and hopes for her son. He also portrays the role of a discouraged teenager effectively, as do the other women she works alongside at "Bruno's.” The conclusion avoids any sentimental glossing over, which I think adds to the impact of this genuinely enjoyable story about a resolute and committed woman.
