Kenneth Branagh, at just 28 years old, took on an enormous challenge with **HENRY V**, marking his first time directing a movie. It's not uncommon for new directors to stumble when trying their hand at filmmaking, but thankfully, **Henry V** turned out to be exceptional. Branagh’s direction is bold and assured. He managed to create a great deal of energy—a real feat considering he was adapting a centuries-old play largely composed of dialogue. The film's visuals feel cinematic rather than theatrical, and his adaptation of the script streamlines the narrative, even incorporating a scene from Shakespeare's **HENRY IV Part 2** to make things clearer. Remarkably, Branagh also delivers a powerful performance as the Young King. His Harry feels completely natural within the story, and his grasp of the language makes the play accessible to modern viewers without sacrificing its poetic quality. The supporting cast is equally strong, with Emma Thompson and Derek Jacobi providing noteworthy performances as the Chorus. It appears that many of these actors will reappear in Branagh's future films, suggesting he prefers a collaborative working style. Patrick Doyle’s musical score is also outstanding, establishing what promises to be an important partnership between director and composer. The music is dramatic and sweeping, equally effective during the battle sequences and the more tender romantic moments. Inevitably, comparisons will be drawn with Olivier's version—a film that hasn’t stood up as well over time. Olivier's production has a bright, colorful look with sets reminiscent of *The Wizard of Oz*, whereas Branagh’s film is raw and realistic, placing the viewer directly on the brutal battlefield of Agincourt. For me personally, **HENRY V** was the first movie I saw all the way through, even staying to watch it again from beginning to end. It demonstrated that Shakespeare can be lively, engaging, and beautiful.
