Roy (played by James Hall) and his brother Monte (Ben Lyon) are incredibly close, with Roy often finding himself rescuing Monte from difficult situations, even going so far as to fight a duel on his behalf. The pair enlist in the Royal Flying Corps shortly before World War I and volunteer for a perilous assignment over enemy-held land. During this time, Roy is involved with Helen (Jean Harlow), who isn’t always faithful and also has an interest in Monte. One brother slowly comes to believe that his brother deserves better treatment, and perhaps will offer solace when she turns to someone else. The mission approaches, and the brothers soon find themselves being chased by the notorious squadron known as "Von Richthofen's Flying Circus" as they try to make their way back. As the conflict escalates, it becomes increasingly personal for them. They unexpectedly discover that they are on opposing sides of Karl (John Darrow), a former classmate who has his own secret mission aboard a zeppelin. While the performances aren’t particularly strong, what resonates is how these characters are forced to confront their immaturity and prepare themselves for difficult choices. The narrative itself isn't groundbreaking. However, the film truly distinguishes itself through its exceptional aerial photography and overall visual style. The air battles are remarkable to witness; the camerawork draws you into the experience of watching young, mostly inexperienced pilots operate – essentially – heavily armored but fragile wooden aircraft with engines. Any damage meant almost certain death. The movie conveys a feeling of how dangerous life was for these young men, and when it avoids excessive drama, it can be quite thrilling to watch.
