It’s hard to miss that Hellraiser has received a modern update, and it's evident throughout. I’ve always enjoyed Clive Barker’s writing; his novels have been a frequent read, and I recall the initial Hellraiser movies fondly. This film, however, doesn’t strike me as faithful to his material. Predictably, it incorporates contemporary themes—nothing unexpected there. But its biggest failing is simplifying the established backstory from the earlier films, using what remains in a way that feels uneven and occasionally confusing. The final product is barely entertaining. It's significantly milder than the original movies and didn’t connect with me on any meaningful level. The performances are acceptable, and as you would anticipate, the film looks reasonably good. Still, I think the earlier films were noticeably superior—much more unsettling and genuinely frightening—compared to this rather underwhelming version.
