Following four theatrical releases and six direct-to-video installments, "Hellraiser" has been revived as a cinematic release for Hulu. For those unfamiliar with the series based on a story by Clive Barker, it centers around a cube-shaped puzzle box that, when opened, calls forth demons known as Cenobites who demand sacrifices and promise rewards to those who summon them. Understandably, their version of rewards is nightmarish, as for them, the distinction between pleasure and pain is even more blurred than their horrifying appearances, leading those who encounter them to beg for death but often facing tortures beyond comprehension. The latest iteration features Odessa A’zion as Riley, a recovering addict living with her brother and his boyfriend alongside a roommate. Her brother worries about her relationship with her boyfriend, believing anyone she meets in recovery isn't stable enough to support her when she needs it. Needing money, Riley is persuaded to take items from an abandoned warehouse but discovers only the mysterious puzzle box, which she eventually manages to reconfigure into one of its various settings. Doing so summons the Cenobites, who immediately take her brother, forcing Riley and her friends to question both her sobriety and her sanity. As they try to figure out what's happening, their investigation reveals a larger mystery and encounters with more Cenobites, including their leader Pinhead (Jamie Clayton), whose sometimes obscure messages can tempt and torment those trying to survive and influence the events unfolding around them. What follows is a combination of suspense and gore as personal desires, survival instincts, temptation, and primal emotions are tested while characters struggle to understand a complex and rapidly evolving nightmare from which escape seems impossible. Although this new version has a slower, more deliberate pace leading up to the conclusion, it was captivating enough to hold my attention. For me, the theatrical films occasionally felt repetitive because they didn’t expand on the underlying story as much as they increased the gore in an attempt to keep audiences coming back. The fact that the last theatrical release had its director remove his name from the film highlights how things had declined. The six video releases were uneven, with Barker no longer involved and eventually Doug Bradley, the original Pinhead, also choosing not to participate because he didn't want to be part of a series where films were produced in just weeks to maintain ownership rights. This time around, thanks to a strong cast and effects combined with a story that remains true to the core concept while feeling fresh and engaging, the franchise has found a much-needed new direction, and it will be interesting to see what comes next, as rumors of a prequel are already circulating. Hulu succeeded with their recent "Predator" film “Prey,” which revitalized that series, and this new installment is not only well-suited for their platform but also represents a positive step forward for the franchise.
