Hellraiser sits somewhere near the bottom of the horror franchises that emerged in the 80s, trailing behind films like Halloween—even though it technically debuted in ’78—Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. I’ve watched this movie a few times across the years, and while it's far from flawless, with a somewhat awkward beginning, it remains enjoyable because the makeup and special effects, despite being a little cheesy, somehow manage to remain striking. The performances aren't particularly memorable, but I appreciated Clare Higgins and Ashley Laurence’s portrayals, along with Doug Bradley as “Lead Cenobite,” who would eventually be known as Pinhead. It's interesting how that character unexpectedly became a horror icon, considering he was initially a relatively small part of the story; however, his design and appearance made it easy to understand why he connected with audiences. Hellraiser, which Clive Barker wrote and directed adapting his novella, isn’t among my top picks—as I said, I tend to prefer more grounded slasher films like Halloween and Friday the 13th over supernatural ones—but I still found it entertaining overall. **3.75/5**
