Even though this film has received unfavorable reviews, I have to admit I enjoyed it considerably. It’s significantly more violent, graphic, and geared toward adults than previous Hellboy films, which likely explains my appreciation for it. I really dislike when a narrative or character is simplified just because executives believe they can attract a younger audience and increase profits, or even worse, cater to easily upset complainers. The movie immediately establishes its tone in the opening scene, making it clear that those who are easily offended should have stayed away. It maintains this approach throughout. The film is quite violent with many graphic effects, especially when considering it’s based on a typical American comic book character. When large demons are unleashed toward the end and human casualties increase, the movie becomes inventive in depicting various ways humans can be killed. Then there's the scene showing Hellboy’s “birth,” which is thankfully quite faithful to the original story. It features Nazis without resorting to politically correct alterations or attempts to hide elements of their uniforms; the swastika is displayed as it should be. That alone should probably cause most overly sensitive individuals distress. There isn’t much preaching about political correctness either, and that's a relief. The plot itself is adequate—nothing particularly remarkable, but not bad either. The action sequences are quite good, naturally. David Harbour does a decent job portraying Hellboy, and Ian McShane is also good as Professor Broom. Milla Jovovich didn’t really stand out as The Blood Queen, though. There were some shortcomings too. The warthog-like changeling that played an important role was often just absurd, and Hellboy's outburst about why humans and demons could coexist felt completely unnecessary. I also thought Hellboy took a bit too much of a beating. It wasn’t until the scenes set six months later at the very end that he truly displayed the self-assured, ass-kicking character I wanted to see. Overall, I liked the movie, and it's disappointing that it didn't receive higher ratings. The predictably negative rating from Rotten Tomatoes was expected, although even with their new system designed to control user reviews, they couldn’t get their audience to align with their critics. They gave it a 17% critic score while over 50% of the audience rated it six or higher. Another failure for RT. The concluding scenes suggested hope for a sequel, but given the film's poor performance, I don’t think that will happen. That would be unfortunate.
