I wasn’t initially drawn in by the opening of this movie. Chris Pine ("Toby") and Ben Foster, as his brother "Howard," commit some robberies against smaller banks, which brings them to the notice of Jeff Bridges, playing Texas ranger ("Hamilton"), who is preparing to retire and seems generally grumpy. However, it ultimately proved to be much better than I initially thought; the characters are well-developed, the writing and tempo hold your attention, and despite a plot full of gaps and contradictions, things move along smoothly as the ranger pursues his increasingly irresponsible target. Bridges’ performance echoes his role in "True Grit" (2010), but Gil Birmingham provides solid support as his partner ("Alberto"), and together they form a fairly energetic and entertaining chase story that kept me guessing about who to root for until almost the very end. With little sentimentality or romance, it even has a bit of a Robin Hood feel to it.
