A group of young adults visits a Halloween horror park close to Cincinnati, but their enjoyment quickly shifts into genuine fear when they realize someone is actually killing people within the amusement park. "Hell Fest" (2018) follows the slasher formula and makes good use of its carnival location, bringing to mind films like “The Funhouse” from 37 years ago and the lengthy amusement park scenes in "Urban Legends: Final Cut.” While I personally found “The Funhouse” better, it received criticism for a perceived slow pace before anything significant occurred. Perhaps that’s why this movie quickly moves things along and gets the characters to the festival fairly fast. This does result in a somewhat limited environment – basically just the carnival at night – but I did enjoy the vibrant carnival scenery. The story becomes engaging when the lead character sees the initial murder, which her friends dismiss as part of the show. Amy Forsyth is effective as Natalie, the appealing central figure. As you’d expect, there are some gruesome moments, though viewers won't find any nudity; the filmmakers notably rejected that common trope. Tony Todd, recognized for his portrayal of Mr. Bludworth in the “Final Destination” movies, has a brief but memorable appearance. The movie is 1 hour and 28 minutes long and was filmed just northwest of Atlanta at Six Flags White Water. Many of the decorations were taken from Six Flags’ Fright Fest displays. GRADE: B-
