Wuchak on Hell Comes to Frogtown

6/10 · Dec 2, 2019

This unusual science fiction/fantasy film features Roddy Piper and Sandahl Bergman. The story unfolds in a ruined American Southwest where Sam Hellman (Piper) finds himself under the control of the provisional government. He’s then escorted by agent Spangle (Bergman) and her associate (Cec Verrell) to Frogtown, an abandoned factory now inhabited by frog-humanoid creatures. Their task involves retrieving a group of captive women. William Smith appears as an antagonist in the story. "Hell Comes to Frogtown" (1988) is a science fiction/fantasy comedy for adults that combines elements reminiscent of the early "Planet of the Apes" films and “Mad Max” with frog people, all delivered with a humorous tone. Piper’s background as a professional wrestler makes him an easy-to-root-for and funny lead character, and Bergman is appealing too, even if she doesn't have quite the same figure as in "Conan the Barbarian" (1982). She seems slimmer now, but remains attractive. Ultimately, this proves to be a diverting and inconsequential film that hits the spot when you’re looking for something undemanding and silly. Despite some suggestive moments, it has a genuine warmth to it. The two main characters are enjoyable to watch as they go about their business, and the conclusion is surprisingly touching. The movie's length is 1 hour and 26 minutes, and filming took place in Southern California locations including Indian Dunes, Valencia; Kaiser Steel Mill, Fontana; Lincoln Foundry, Vernon; and Vasquez Rocks, Agua Dulce.
