It proved to be largely an unpleasant experience because the subject matter is something I’ve personally dealt with—the one redeeming quality that warrants a three-star rating is Ashley Judd's performance; the actresses Jean and Marilyn series didn't make much of an impression across numerous films. Her portrayal captures pure anguish for someone familiar with diagnoses similar to those her character experiences (Major Depression with psychotic symptoms and mild bipolar disorder). It’s likely her finest role yet, effectively conveying distress, sometimes seemingly without reason, and the facades we often construct to maintain a semblance of normalcy. The film also includes an explanation that Judd—who is also an activist—has struggled with depression throughout her life, something that isn't easily resolved; it requires learning how to manage it. She experienced a difficult adolescence and underwent significant rehabilitation in 2006, compounded now by the suicide of her mother in 2022 (a condition often seen as hereditary). The primary shortcomings stem from Sandra Nettelbeck, the German writer and director—also a survivor of depression—best known for "Mostly Martha" (2001) and other less intense films. The narrative could have been significantly stronger, and casting Goran Visnjic (recently appearing in various series and the “Hellraiser” remake) as a supportive husband attempting to navigate the situation wasn't ideal. While it’s true that only someone who has experienced this firsthand can fully grasp it, many people are capable of understanding through empathy even without having personally lived with depression. Ultimately, I would suggest this TV movie—it appears to be one due to occasional black screen transitions—only to those wanting a glimpse into the reality of living with major depression (even if we don’t truly understand what's happening inside the protagonist’s mind). It is painful to watch and as authentic as it can be. I can only imagine how impactful this could have been with a more accomplished writer and director, allowing Ashley Judd and her acting abilities to truly shine. Had it been treated with greater seriousness, she might have been considered for best actress. For her performance alone, I’d give it a 6 out of 10 / C+.
