I pictured Clifton Webb as "Henry Van Cleve" at times, but Don Ameche does an acceptable job when he enters the downstairs waiting room for his meeting with Laird Cregar. He believes he’s lived a prosperous life that should earn him denial from the upper echelons where Mozart and Beethoven are still heard, but his interviewer allows him to recount his story, which is what we get here. "Henry" hails from an affluent New York family where his father, “Randolph” (Louis Calhern), and mother, “Bertha” (Spring Byington), expect him to adhere to societal norms. He doesn’t really want to participate in that charade, but no one anticipates he'll elope with his cousin’s fiancée, "Martha" (Gene Tierney), right as she becomes engaged. The story then follows the couple through their challenges raising their son, “Jack,” with help from his grandfather, "Hugo" (Charles Coburn), before misfortune enters his life. Initially, we all form judgments about "Henry," but eventually we understand that he’s actually a good sort whose natural reactions are a welcome contrast to the formality and affected snobbery of a society that has lost touch with its own spontaneous origins. Coburn is excellent, Eugene Pallette—and his distinctive voice—provides some amusing brief appearances as her father, and while it might feel drawn out at times, it's a story about genuine affection told in a pleasant, approachable manner that lets the connection between Ameche and Tierney develop gradually.
