“Heathers” feels akin to a very dark reimagining of “Rebel Without A Cause,” or something similar, as it delves into the intricate and complex nature of teenage frustration, ultimately offering an extreme, even murderous, response. The film is full of the often unimportant worries that come with the social structures found in every school, showing some brutal examples of how harsh things can be. It makes you wonder who would willingly want to relive those years. Regardless of how bleak the movie gets or how close Veronica comes to freeing herself from the Heathers, she hesitates at the very end and pulls back (she even stops J.D. from detonating explosives in the school). The point being made is straightforward: completely destroying a school and everything it symbolizes for teenagers who feel left out isn’t the answer to all of life's difficulties.
