The humor is sharp and dark without sacrificing substance, offering a spot-on depiction of the turmoil inherent in high school—and society more broadly. The movie suggests that Marthas and Heathers exist everywhere, mirroring the dynamics found within the confines of high school itself. J.D. functions as an effective antagonist because, despite his disturbing nature being evident from the start, viewers find themselves understanding him, much like Veronica does. This highlights a societal tendency to excuse the actions of white men. The film is also clearly a commentary on existing social structures, illustrating them through the microcosm of high school life. As J.D. observes near the conclusion, ".. because high school IS society." The Heathers’ control over the student body is explored in detail, revealing how a system elevates some individuals—like the Heathers—while relegating others—like Martha—to lower positions. While killing Heather Chandler might seem like a way to dismantle this hierarchy and create an ideal world, that isn't what happens.
