This is a worthwhile movie, showcasing talented actors performing at their best, offering a fresh perspective within the action genre and deserving of repeat viewings. There’s something enjoyable about an action film centered around clever thieves and determined police officers pushing boundaries to make arrests—and this movie fits that bill perfectly. Even though we've seen similar stories before, it doesn't feel stale or lose its appeal. Michael Mann has established himself as a director of impactful action films, largely due to this work, along with “The Insider” and “Collateral.” Prior to this film, he demonstrated impressive skill directing "Last of the Mohicans," which I consider an excellent example of balancing creative freedom, historical accuracy, and respect for the original material. Mann doesn't let down here either, delivering consistently strong, committed, and inventive direction. The film assembled a cast of accomplished performers. While not every actor receives equal screen time, it seems each was given enough opportunity to do commendable work. Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are particularly memorable. Beyond their roles in the plot, they both bring incredible intensity, charisma, and explosive energy. Their on-screen confrontation is something worth seeing. Pacino’s character is difficult to like due to his constant state of agitation. De Niro's character feels more approachable and humane, making him easier to support. Val Kilmer and Jon Voight also deliver excellent performances, as does Tom Sizemore. The film includes appearances from Danny Trejo (playing a version of himself) and a young Natalie Portman, among other recognizable faces. Some viewers might note that the movie contains relatively little action. It's true that the focus is on developing the characters and their individual stories, which concentrates the action into specific sequences like the memorable robbery scene with gunfire in the street. I appreciated this approach and felt it was a positive deviation from the norm. My only reservation concerns the film’s occasionally slow and deliberate pacing; some tighter editing could have made it feel more streamlined. Filmed on location in Los Angeles, the sets and costumes convincingly aim for complete realism—I can only guess at the logistical challenges involved! The special effects are well-executed, the cinematography is beautiful, and the movie has a visually sophisticated and mature quality.
