Sir Anthony Hopkins demonstrates that restraint can be incredibly effective. His measured portrayal of "Ted" significantly elevates what would otherwise be a straightforward narrative centered on a widow, Hope Davis, and her young son, "Bobby," played by Anton Yeltsin. A friendship develops between the older man and the boy—though it raises concerns with the mother, who is portrayed as somewhat self-centered but ultimately caring—and they begin to share secrets and an unusual ability as their connection deepens. The film presents events through the recollections of the older man, alongside Anton Yeltsin’s energetic depiction of a young boy experiencing his first affections while also navigating typical childhood challenges like dealing with schoolyard tormentors. It unfolds in a subtle way; it moves forward at a deliberate speed, and feels true to Stephen King's original work. Michael Danna’s understated score also complements the story well.
