Clint Eastwood remains a force to be reckoned with. Among Eastwood’s more approachable films from the eighties, Heartbreak Ridge finds the actor performing admirably, despite the final section—a somewhat absurd rescue operation in Grenada involving extensive gunfire—feeling unconvincing. The film earns its merit thanks to James Carabatsos' sharp script and a subplot concerning his former spouse, Aggie (Marsha Mason). Despite all of the displays of masculinity and training sequences (viewers might have preferred to remain at boot camp once Grenada appears), it’s fundamentally a gentle story about a man unable to relinquish his profession, alongside a wife—his ex—who endured daily hardship while he was away fighting in Korea or Vietnam. However, it's the humor that has established the film as one of the most frequently quoted works from Eastwood’s prime. Whether it’s Eastwood delivering clever retorts to his mismatched group of soldiers, or Mario Van Peebles comically resembling a youthful Michael Jackson, there is considerable entertainment to be found throughout. There's even someone present with legs larger than Sylvester Stallone! Consequently, numerous stereotypes are on display, most notably Everett McGill’s inexperienced Major Powers, and the conclusion is entirely predictable. Nevertheless, join in the enjoyment while recognizing that it also explores deeper themes worthy of attention. 7/10
