The inescapable nature of a troubled past seems to be the central theme here. Like many others, I was hoping for 'The Raid 3', but this is what I ended up with instead. Iko Uwais has undoubtedly become a significant figure, and he’s helped bring Indonesian films to an international audience. However, it appears his ascent may be followed by a decline. The film relies heavily on martial arts action; he's an artist himself, of course, but drawing comparisons to figures like Tony Jaa and the Hong Kong and Chinese film industries suggests this is a passing trend. To sustain the industry long-term, compelling narratives and strong acting are necessary alongside quality production values. ‘The Raid’ films were successful, but their formula seems exhausted now. This feels like a rehash of those earlier movies, just with different characters and situations. While stunt enthusiasts might find something to enjoy, what was truly lacking was a good story. Many viewers, including critics, feel the same way, which is why it didn't live up to expectations. It’s being released in an era dominated by CGI-heavy films like 'Mad Max: Fury Road', yet some people still prefer straightforward martial arts movies. It’s an action film centered around gangsters. The story involves a notorious gangster leader named Lee escaping from prison, and a young man found unconscious on a beach who is then treated by an aspiring doctor. Lee learns about this amnesiac man and sends his best fighters to find him. Things don't go as planned, and the confrontations between them gradually bring back the man’s lost memories. After overcoming all of his adversaries, he prepares for a final showdown with Lee, which concludes the story. > ❝You saved me before. I need you to save me one more time.❞ The production quality was decent, but the performances were unremarkable because so much emphasis was placed on the action sequences. At minimum, I’d have expected some better dialogue. The romantic subplot felt forced and underdeveloped; it's hard to buy into it. It isn’t even among the best martial arts films out there. There were a few plot twists, but none of them were particularly surprising. A stronger showing in the action sequences could have improved the film considerably. I'm sure some people will enjoy it, but for me, it wasn't to my taste—just not what I was looking for. Sometimes a weak start can be overcome by a strong remainder, but this one didn’t improve. The beginning felt very predictable, and things never really got better. Especially the ending was disappointing. The film seems overly reliant on Iko Uwais’s presence, and the character of Lee was built up too much; as a result, the rest of the cast feels sidelined. Ultimately, I don't think they capitalized on an opportunity to make a truly good movie because nothing felt designed or executed particularly well. From its familiarity to its predictability, the storytelling never managed to elevate itself. Some might suggest it’s worth seeing once, but in my opinion, it isn't. It's really up to you whether or not you want to watch it. 4.5/10
