Alex Dimitriades portrays Ari, a young Greek man who’s having difficulty finding work after his family moved to Melbourne. He spends his days with friends using drugs and engaging in discreet encounters with men. The film isn't specifically about being gay; it offers a wider look at a person lacking both cultural heritage and stable connections to navigate what feels like an empty life. The community is caught between preserving their ancestral customs and adjusting to the acceptance of their adopted country, which culminates in some disturbing displays of homophobia toward the end. Dimitriades delivers a decent performance, as does Paul Capsis playing his openly gay/cross-dressing relative "Johnny," but the other actors largely seem to be there to exemplify clichés, contributing little substance to the conversations. It could realistically represent any immigrant experience anywhere—and it doesn’t quite succeed because Ari appears almost destined for his superficial lifestyle.
