It’s easy to take familiar sights for granted, but imagine existing in an era where sparrows were ground up for potions intended to repel evil – that’s just one of the oddities explored in this unusual examination of all things demonic and sinister. The presentation isn’t entirely logical as it moves through various beliefs related to witchcraft, however, by the conclusion of chapter six, a powerful assessment emerges regarding the ridiculous, frightening, superstitious, and religious aspects of humanity's reactions when confronted with the mysterious and unknown. Attempts to physically enhance humans with wings, horns, and hooves are shown alongside ancient texts, silent film clips, and plasticine animations; this illustrates that belief in mysticism wasn’t limited to those without formal education. The accompanying text cards are sharp, informative, and conversational as they attempt to find a balance between humor and seriousness, and some of the portrayals offer genuine insights, particularly considering how often the church instigated or managed the fallout from these old stories filled with fear and violence. I wasn’t able to fully grasp everything presented, but it seems that director Benjamin Christansen intended this, opening up a complex situation and allowing viewers to sort through it themselves. What one person considers a witch, another might see as a nun!
