Many fantasy films appeared during the late seventies, yet this one stands out as particularly underwhelming, even with Jack Palance playing the somewhat effective villain "Voltan." He’s a cruel character responsible for killing his father and his brother's girlfriend, so it’s no surprise that his brother, “Hawk” (John Terry), is seeking retribution. Achieving this won’t be simple, as he faces considerable challenges and some magical elements, but he gathers an unlikely group of fellow rebels. Equipped with a companion who can shoot a crossbow like a Gatling gun, he begins his quest for vengeance. Palance delivers a performance full of theatricality, moving heavily in his large black cape and brandishing his oversized sword with the grace of a rhino struggling through molasses, but he’s significantly better than most of the other performers. Bernard Bresslaw possesses the physical presence needed for the giant character and occasionally seems well-suited to the role; however, the rest of the group appears overly focused on the tumbling fight sequences and visual effects cues, seemingly having little enjoyment in what they're doing. Unfortunately, that absence of excitement spreads, preventing the narrative from truly taking off. I sensed it was a lost cause when the nuns showed up without singing "How Do You Solve a Problem..." I wanted to be lenient given my fondness for the genre, but ultimately, this is an over-written and cheaply made fantasy film that proves simply disheartening.
