This is easily the strongest film I’ve encountered all year. It’s full-on, with a constant barrage of violence and bloodshed that's pretty extreme. That isn’t typically what I go looking for in a movie, but it somehow feels appropriate given where we are right now. The plot moves forward like bursts from a gun—one after another. The writers and director don’t let up; they maintain a relentless pace. If you appreciate dark humor, you'll probably get through it. The digital effects and artificial intelligence elements that I usually dislike actually lend the scenes a certain lightness, almost like something out of a video game. A lot of the camera angles resemble gameplay footage. The visuals have a gritty, realistic cyberpunk feel, and the deep bass sounds are reminiscent of club music videos until the action begins. I might suggest that Tom Hardy’s performance is what carries the story, but really everything about it feels intense—every character and every action is exposed and raw. Jessie Mei Li delivers a strong portrayal of Ellie, who remains morally sound amidst all the chaos; she's an innocent observer through whose eyes we witness the unfolding madness. The nightclub shootout, beginning with the train rolling in and building to a storm of precisely staged fight sequences, is my favorite part. There are many excellent action scenes, realistic gun sounds, and seamless transitions. It depicts a situation where everyone’s against everyone else, happening out on the streets as our democratic systems seem to be falling apart. Any attempts at redemption by Hardy's character get swallowed up by what’s going on around him. It doesn’t hold back. This is exactly what we need in 2025.
