Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) and her son Travis (Chase Dillon) find themselves in their new house only to be confronted by an animated suit of armor, sending them running for their lives. Their escape proves complicated, leading them to seek assistance from priest Fr. Kent (Owen Wilson), who then connects with Ben (LaKeith Stanfield). He’s created a camera capable of capturing images of spirits. As the situation escalates within the house, this group must figure out what's causing the haunting before things get worse for everyone involved. Danny DeVito provides some amusing, exaggerated moments and Tiffany Haddish is entertaining as Harriet, the medium, but beyond that, it feels like a familiar retelling of the 2003 film—though I personally found it to be a bit improved without Eddie Murphy in the cast. The special effects are fairly typical, the soundtrack feels excessive, and while Jared Leto’s presence has been noted, I'm not convinced his role as the Top-hat ghoul made much of a difference. It provides decent entertainment for Christmas television, but it isn't particularly frightening and won’t likely stick with you for very long.
