Greetings, fellow enthusiasts, and welcome to the newest version of the beloved Disney ride as Haunted Mansion has appeared for everyone to see. This installment centers around a mother named Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) and her son Travis (Chase W. Dillon). The pair has relocated to an empty house close to New Orleans hoping for a fresh start, but they soon discover their new home is inhabited by spirits. Despite attempts to escape, the ghosts compel them back to the mansion where they seek assistance from a Priest named Father Kent (Owen Wilson), and Ben Matthias (LaKeith Stanfield) whose career has diminished following a personal tragedy that erased his expertise. When these helpers manage to leave the house without supernatural guidance, they enlist a Medium named Harriet (Tiffany Haddish) and eventually Madame Leota (Jamie Lee Curtis). It’s revealed that a dangerous ghost is frightening the other 999 spirits living there and if he gathers his 1000th soul, he will unleash an unprecedented level of terror. The situation becomes even more complex when a local professor named Bruce (Danny DeVito) shows up and introduces another unpredictable element to the mix. The film does a commendable job of recreating the appearance and feel of the attraction; one of the greatest pleasures was seeing details like the artwork, stretching room, and other significant and minor elements from the ride brought to life on screen. The cast is excellent and their interactions are enjoyable, though the movie takes some time to build momentum and I noticed it felt slow at times. The audience chuckled often, but many of the jokes didn't resonate with me; I believe they were geared toward a younger crowd as I found them more amusing than genuinely funny. The special effects are impressive, and Jared Leto’s character is so well realized you can hardly recognize him because he has completely immersed himself in the role, thanks to some outstanding visual work. As someone who loves the attraction, it was gratifying to see a much improved adaptation of the original material compared to previous attempts. Ultimately, despite its shortcomings, there's enough familiar enjoyment to keep fans engaged and hopefully inspire audiences to want to experience the mansion again, potentially leading to a new series of films. 3 stars out of 5
