The Edbrook Haunting. Directed by Lewis Gilbert, who also helped write the screenplay with Bob Kellett and Timothy Prager from James Herbert’s novel, this film features Aidan Quinn, Kate Beckinsale, Anthony Andrews, Alex Lowe, John Gielgud, and Anna Massey in its cast. The score is composed by Debbie Wiseman, and Tony Pierce-Roberts handled the cinematography. David Ash (Quinn), who became a parapsychologist after the accidental death of his twin sister during childhood, is invited to investigate strange occurrences at Edbrook House, the home of the Mariell family. He agrees to examine the situation, but soon finds himself in a very different circumstance than he anticipated... This film represents an older style of horror, a period piece with some merit, though it's not likely to provide intense scares. The novel by James Herbert didn’t quite live up to his usual high standards, so viewers should adjust their expectations and anticipate a more subtle, atmospheric chiller rather than something overtly frightening. A sense of romance permeates the film, and Gilbert seems influenced by films like *The Haunting* for its suspense and *Don't Look Now* for its focus on grief. The period detail from the 1920s is well done, and Roberts’ photography effectively captures both the beauty of the English countryside and the darker atmosphere within Edbrook House. The acting is generally solid; Quinn and Beckinsale have a pleasant chemistry together, while Andrews and Lowe portray the Mariell brothers as noticeably eccentric. Massey doesn't seem to be stretched by her part, and Gielgud appears mostly for a brief appearance. The film loses focus somewhat toward the end, which isn’t helped by some low-quality special effects, but it still offers worthwhile entertainment. Themes of grief, guilt, redemption, and incest are present, along with glimpses of David's deceased sister as a ghost appearing at the edges of the story; these elements contribute to an overall feeling of unease and demonstrate considerable effort. The source material—the book—is superior, though. 7/10
