A sense of discomfort was present from the beginning; those attempting playful disruptions often spoil the atmosphere, and something felt amiss even before stepping inside the haunted house. The intensity increases, fear takes hold of the characters, and it seems everything has spiraled out of control, making escape an unlikely prospect. The violence is inventive and gratifyingly deranged, with a striking, gruesome beauty to its cruelty. I’m finding myself increasingly drawn to this newer category of torture/horror films; this one proved genuinely entertaining and enjoyable.
