The film explores the disturbing consequences of dehumanizing others until it leads to mental instability. It begins pleasantly enough, showcasing a wedding celebration that involves the entire community—both Polish and Ukrainian families—during a late spring in 1939. However, an unpleasant feeling lingers beneath the surface of the festivities. I was completely unaware of how far things would descend. This is a piece of WWII history that was previously unknown to me. It’s perplexing to consider how individuals can coexist with others, marry into families, collaborate professionally, share meals and moments of joy—yet still harbor resentment toward those same people due to the conviction that their own lives are suffering because of them. The film requires close attention, as there's significant foreshadowing that I overlooked during my initial viewing. Hatred is a debilitating illness, an extreme form of insanity, and essentially a manifestation of self-loathing. As history has repeatedly demonstrated, it’s capable of obliterating everything in its path. And then the power dynamics change, and there's always someone else to target with animosity. It’s just madness. I want to add something after watching it again: I noticed the decent people—those who offered assistance—and I hope those who helped in real life passed away feeling at peace, knowing they did what they could.
