Cynthia Erivo’s performance is a real highlight as the woman at the center of the story, portraying her efforts to break free from a legacy of enslavement and then help liberate her family and community from harsh rule. The portrayal of her resolve, along with her spirit and bravery, does come across effectively, but unfortunately the rest of the production feels comparable to a standard television film. It’s not that the acting is poor; it's more that the performers—particularly Joe Alwyn as "Brodess"—don’t quite make an impression. Janelle Monáe appears sparingly and isn't able to have much effect, and the rest of the story unfolds along a carefully planned path that doesn't manage to convey the danger she encounters while challenging established norms. Everything feels somewhat too polished and impersonal; even during moments intended to be emotionally powerful, I found myself expecting a musical number. Perhaps that might have improved things? There’s also not enough focus on her role as someone fighting for liberation—a figure similar to Robin Hood, aiming to free her people with limited violence and resisting the urge for retribution against those who mistreated them. The point is present, certainly, but it depends too heavily on what viewers already believe rather than vividly showing how difficult her situation is and how unfair it is that her people are held back emotionally. It’s acceptable enough to watch, but ultimately a bit disappointing.
