While 'Harriet' relies on familiar storytelling devices and seems overly concerned with achieving a certain impact, this doesn’t diminish the superb performances, remarkable score, or the powerful reality of Harriet Tubman's courage. Considering the current climate with Black Lives Matter highlighting ongoing struggles against violence and systemic racism within the United States, 'Harriet' unfortunately functions as another illustration of the continuous mistreatment faced by African Americans. Movies dealing with slavery remain important because that same prejudice persists today. I’d like to close with a line from the film’s song ‘Stand Up,’ which feels particularly meaningful: “I'm going to stand up, take my people with me, together we are going, to a brand-new home.”
