Harold, who comes from a wealthy family, seems to crave his mother’s approval, often staging elaborate suicide attempts to get her attention. However, she doesn't respond as he hopes, so he looks for other ways to entertain himself and begins going to funerals. It is there that he meets Maude, an unusual woman with a similar fascination for the ceremonies – plus a taste for stealing cars from the graveyard afterward. As his mother becomes more involved in trying to find him a girlfriend, Harold spends increasing amounts of time with Maude, discovering that her approach to life is exciting and infectious. Their connection deepens as they depend on each other, eventually developing feelings of affection. Cort and Gordon have an excellent rapport; she encourages the best from her younger colleague, and both offer compelling performances in a story that’s humorous, touching, and dreamlike—often all at once. The dialogue occasionally feels a bit drawn out, but Pickles is enjoyable as the mother, and the narrative focuses on interesting characters and genuine moments. It moves along quickly, never lingering too long before accelerating again. It's an entertaining film.
