What if the story of Rasputin were transplanted into a contemporary political family? A California senator and his wife (played by David Hemmings and Carmen Duncan) find themselves perplexed by the unexpected arrival of an unusual man, portrayed by Robert Powell, who appears to possess the ability to heal their son, who is battling leukemia. Broderick Crawford also features as a powerful figure in politics. "Harlequin," filmed in 1979, was first shown in Australia in 1980 before finally reaching America between 1983 and 1984. The film draws inspiration from Grigori Rasputin, the mystic and healer who exerted influence over Russia’s imperial family leading up to his assassination in late 1916, combined with the character of the harlequin from Italian theater traditions. A noteworthy aspect is that the title character is played by the same actor who previously portrayed Jesus Christ in the television series “Jesus of Nazareth.” It's also worth noting that David Bowie was initially considered for this demanding role. Although production took place in Perth, the filmmakers concealed this fact to enhance international sales, presenting the setting as America through references to American states and political structures. This deception was aided by casting British and American actors, along with Alan Cassell’s voice being altered to an American accent. The decision to do so generated controversy given that the film received funding from Australian taxpayers. However, audiences will quickly realize it isn't actually set in America when Sandra Rast drives a car and operates it from the right side of the road (laugh out loud). While portions of the musical score feel dated and somewhat suspect, there are enough compelling aspects to hold the attention of those who might be interested. Alyson Best has a few appearances and stands out visually. The senator, portrayed by Hemmings, bears a resemblance to Donald Trump in his 50s. The film’s length is 1 hour and 35 minutes, and it's also known as “Dark Forces” and “The Minister's Magician.” GRADE: B-
