George C. Scott delivers a performance that feels notably different from his usual work. He portrays “Van Dorn,” a respectable businessman who is deeply troubled when his teenage daughter vanishes. Engaging “Mast” (Peter Boyle) to locate her, he uncovers unsettling information suggesting she’s appearing in low-budget adult films. Driven by the desire to find and retrieve her, he attempts to gather clues from sex workers, displaying photographs and posing questions. Mistaken for law enforcement, they become reluctant to speak, leading him to believe a new approach is necessary. He adopts a gold chain and a false moustache, presenting himself as a producer in an attempt to locate either his daughter “Kristen” or her “co-star.” Beyond being one of Scott’s better performances, this gritty and realistically presented drama also provides Boyle with an opportunity to stand out, which he does. His character functions as a useful guide as we observe the darker aspects of Los Angeles alongside a devout father whose faith and worldview are profoundly challenged while experiencing something entirely unforeseen. It unfolds at a deliberate pace with limited dialogue, which I felt was beneficial because it allowed for greater immersion in an environment filled with individuals who are unscrupulous, desperate, and avaricious – but also people struggling to get by.
