Marianne Jean-Baptiste is remarkable in her portrayal of the character known as "Pansy." She plays a woman who’s married to “Curtley” (David Webber) and has a son, "Moses" (Tiwaine Barrett), but she's clearly not content. Her perspective seems consistently negative as she delivers lengthy speeches filled with disheartening comments about societal problems while frequently clashing with those around her—even her own family. This family also includes her more optimistic hairdresser sister “Chantelle” (Michele Austin), and it’s through their relationship that we begin to understand the possible reasons behind this pattern of destructive actions. The story focuses on a short period in their lives, offering us limited background information before reaching an unclear resolution; however, it does raise questions about the significance of family relationships and how grief and mental health challenges can affect not only those directly experiencing them but also those connected to them. There’s also a poignant performance by Barrett as a son who appears withdrawn and might have learning disabilities, seen wandering the streets with headphones on, looking quite isolated. The conversations are often charged, alternating between "Pansy's" sharp, angry outbursts and the more cheerful exchanges of her sister and her young daughters, who seem focused on enjoying life. The film moves quickly and can be both engaging and challenging to watch, demonstrating an actor’s ability to convey a wide range of emotions with apparent ease. I would have appreciated a bit more background information because there were moments when I felt lost, but it remains a powerful performance from MJ-B that is deserving of an hour and a half of your time.
