It's easy to see why the whales might be upset; these intrusive students barge into their celebration in the Bering Sea, inadvertently stirring up a forgotten Soviet satellite that fell into the water long ago. The group, under the direction of “Graff” (Lance Henriksen), begins an examination of this debris—and quickly regrets their decision. Its origin is unclear, whether it came from a research facility or somewhere beyond Earth, but there are microscopic organisms present which are multiplying rapidly and seem to be very cold and hungry! It resembles a frigid, underwater take on “The Thing” (1982), though lacking any real sense of danger, alongside some remarkably uninspired performances and visual effects that struggle to create suspense from something as lifeless as the ocean floor. I watched it in its initial form, and that was enough—it plainly drew inspiration from numerous sources like “Dr. Who” and “Harry Potter,” ultimately delivering a creature completely lacking any excitement or impact. The brief running time is a small mercy, but I’d recommend steering clear of this one, unfortunately.
