The initial moments seemed really hopeful, presenting a raw depiction not only of sexuality but also of the physical connection within a relationship. However, once the two men went on vacation to Argentina, it didn’t take long to realize their bond was falling apart. They go their separate ways and end up living lives that neither truly desired—yet they feel unable to return to what they had; unwilling to do so. One life finds some new sense of purpose, while the other spirals downward. The film is visually stunning, with director Wong Kar-Wai taking advantage of Argentina’s impressive landscapes, but I suspect that visual scale overshadowed the narrative itself. The characters are well-developed, and both actors perform admirably throughout, yet I experienced a definite feeling of weariness watching it. It wouldn't be right to label this as melodrama, but for some reason, I didn’t feel connected to the characters. While I felt bad for "Po-wing" (Leslie Cheung), he also became quite annoying; his constant self-reflection eventually got on my nerves. “Yiu-fai” (Tony Leung) offered a bit more—a sense of hope, perhaps—but still didn’t fully capture my attention. Perhaps because European films have mostly lost the power to genuinely surprise, this one had less impact than I expected; although it's easy enough to watch, ultimately I was disappointed.
