The movie features a respectable cast, appealing settings, and acceptable special effects, but suffers from poor storytelling. The story involves students at an upstate New York college who observe their yearly Hell Night tradition, unintentionally freeing a malevolent patient from a local asylum—a man with prior connections to the school. Darren McGavin portrays the father of two students (Franke John Hughes & Nick Gregory), while Sam Rockwell appears as his younger self in flashback sequences. "Happy Hell Night" (1992) possesses all the ingredients needed for a strong slasher film, but it falls short due to noticeably unskilled directing and editing. Certain essential scenes are handled so poorly that I felt those responsible should have been dismissed from their positions. The supernatural aspects feel forced into the narrative, accompanied by confusing explanations. Fortunately, the villain is reasonably menacing, and the actresses involved deliver solid performances; Laura Carney (Liz), Tatjana Pujin (Kimberly), Gala Videnovic (Marjorie), Jorja Fox (Kappa Sig Girl) and Kate Delay (Susan) are particularly noteworthy. As someone who enjoys this type of movie, it’s puzzling that this one didn't succeed given the production values and the opportunity to learn from a decade’s worth of similar films. The film has a running time of 1 hour, 27 minutes, and was filmed in Yugoslavia and Humber College, Toronto—though I believe the latter location only applies to exterior shots. GRADE: D+/C-
