The film ‘Happy as Lazzaro’ appears and disappears like a fleeting story, though it falls short of the effect it seems to be aiming for. The narrative struggles because its shift feels unconvincing and not fully developed; this holds back the more fantastical elements in the latter portion, after a slow-moving initial section grounded in reality. It's admirable what the filmmakers were trying to achieve, and it’s certainly worth watching, but ultimately doesn’t quite reach true greatness.
