The film centers on Anne (Anamaria Vartolomei), a student preparing for a career as an educator, who discovers she’s pregnant and must then grapple with the choice of what to do about it. The story unfolds in 1960s France, a time when abortion was against the law and carried significant risks and expenses across much of Europe. A brief encounter with Max (Julien Frison) resulted in her pregnancy, prompting her to seek his assistance, though he proves unable to help, leaving her largely on her own as she struggles to gather funds while also dealing with the impact this situation has on her studies. While the initial development of this autobiographical narrative isn’t particularly remarkable, the final twenty minutes prove surprisingly captivating. The film brought to mind Imelda Staunton's noteworthy "Vera Drake" (2004). It hasn’t been since that movie appeared that I’ve encountered a work so directly confronting the hazards associated with illegal abortions and the shame experienced by those who considered it their only viable option—and Vartolomei gives a solid, largely solo performance that is quite successful at engaging viewers in her situation and prompting reflection.
