This film about the Danish writer’s life has elements that make it simple to criticize; it doesn't closely follow what actually happened to him, and its structure feels disjointed, which hinders the overall pacing. Despite these shortcomings, Danny Kaye and Charles Vidor had a strong sense of purpose – and they weren’t aiming for a straightforward biographical account. Instead, it presents itself as a vibrant, expansive collection of fantasies designed to evoke emotion, bringing smiles, moments of discomfort, and even prompting you to tap your feet, mirroring the author's own lively imagination. Kaye gives a memorable performance, portraying his character with charm and capturing both the hardship and optimism—as well as the idealized version of Denmark—that the film presents while illustrating some of the most impactful and politically astute “fairy tales” ever created. Visually, it’s quite striking, boasting gorgeous costumes and sets, although occasionally the production feels somewhat theatrical. The soundtrack by Frank Loesser, with contributions from Schubert and Liszt, is another highlight, providing enduring songs that may not be particularly complex lyrically but are deeply connected to many people's childhood memories, showcasing Kaye’s versatility. I wasn’t entirely convinced by the dance routines; they felt overly rigid and somewhat impersonal at times. However, the dancers themselves are exceptionally talented, and when the narrative enters his fantasy realm and allows the stories to take center stage, it becomes a genuinely pleasurable two-hour escape.
