This isn't meant to be an account of his life; it’s simply a fantasy centered on a storyteller. The very first words onscreen point out something that many online discussions have missed: this is not intended as a serious, biographical portrayal. Instead, it’s a tribute to the man and his creations. Who could be better suited to portray this iconic Dane than Danny Kaye? His energetic style complements the vibrant colors that shine throughout Charles Vidor's film. The narrative follows Cobbler Andersen as he departs his hometown of Odense in search of a fresh start in Copenhagen. It’s there that he gains recognition for his stories, which bring happiness to Danish children—and where he creates his celebrated ballet adaptation of The Little Mermaid. He encounters difficulties, finds romance with an attractive woman, and most importantly, discovers his purpose. It's a charming fairytale in its own right. Prepare yourself for performances of The Emperor’s New Clothes, Wonderful Copenhagen, Thumbelina, and The Ugly Duckling, before being captivated by the 15-minute ballet presentation of The Little Mermaid. Hans Christian Andersen is a wonderfully upbeat film; it might feel overly sentimental to some viewers, but those who appreciate lighter fare will find plenty to enjoy. 8/10
