This Western features Raquel Welch, Robert Culp, and surprisingly, the Three Stooges. Following an incident where three unpleasant characters (Ernest Borgnine, Jack Elam & Strother Martin) bothered a pair at a ranch far out in the Southwest, the woman (Raquel Welch) joins forces with a well-known bounty hunter (Robert Culp) to learn how to use a gun and possibly get even. Christopher Lee portrays a gunsmith, while Stephan Boyd takes on the role of an enigmatic man dressed entirely in black. “Hannie Caulder,” released in 1971, was produced by a British firm (Tigon), filmed in Spain with primarily American actors and a director (Burt Kennedy). This puts it in the category of a Spaghetti Western, even though no Italians were involved in its creation. Still, it’s better than most Italian-made Westerns from that era. Welch's acting isn't exceptional, but she is visually striking, particularly at the beginning with her poncho. Culp offers solid support through his performance and an engaging character. The coastal settings where the gunsmith resides are also remarkable, bringing to mind “One-Eyed Jacks” (1961). The more dramatic parts of the story feel a bit strange alongside the antics of those three villains who were apparently meant to be humorous, but really don't fit into the movie. "Hannie Caulder" was later reinterpreted as “6 Guns” by The Asylum in 2010. It’s just as enjoyable, and perhaps even superior, because it leaves out the misguided attempt at comedic relief. The film has a running time of 1 hour, 25 minutes, and was filmed primarily in Almería, Andalucía, Spain. GRADE: B-/B
