John Chard on Hannie Caulder

7.5/10 · Feb 17, 2014

I can’t recommend this enough! Believe me, I think it's terrific. Raquel Welch portrays Hannie Caulder, an attractive cowgirl who experiences a brutal assault and is left a widow by three unsavory men portrayed by Ernest Borgnine, Strother Martin and Jack Elam. Determined to get even, Hannie joins forces with charming bounty hunter Thomas Luther Price (Robert Culp delivers a strong performance), learns how to use firearms, and goes after those responsible. That’s essentially the film; it is what it is. Welch looks breathtakingly beautiful and alluring, and director Burt Kennedy takes every chance he can to showcase this. To be fair, she seems like an odd choice for the part, but honestly, that's not a significant issue, nor is spotting Christopher Lee in the cast as a crafty old gunsmith! The combination of humor with a storyline about revenge after sexual assault occasionally feels awkward, though it’s not overly offensive. Kennedy also demonstrates skill in staging action sequences. Edward Scaife’s cinematography (Panavision) is visually appealing, filmed on location in Almería, Spain, and Ken Thorne's musical score moves along without being distracting. It’s unusual, even distinctive, and although it fails to become a Western with feminist significance, there's plenty of entertainment value for those who embrace its absurdity. 7/10
