This installment in the series isn’t terrible, yet the menace associated with Sir Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of “Hannibal Lecter” feels diminished; and Julianne Moore fails to match Jodie Foster’s compelling presence as FBI agent "Clarice." The plot also feels overly engineered: Millionaire Gary Oldman ("Verger") attempts to manipulate "Clarice" in order to draw out "Lecter," who is hiding in Florence, working as a museum curator, for reasons of retribution. After she learns his whereabouts, she informs the Italian police and requests surveillance; however, one officer, motivated by the offered reward, decides to act independently... Hopkins then returns to America with a singular purpose, initiating a complex intellectual battle. The film feels like a collection of disconnected episodes instead of an integrated storyline; while there’s still brutality on display, it lacks nuance – the writing isn't particularly clever; and despite attempts to evoke the atmosphere of "Silence of the Lambs" (1991) through classical music, the effect falls short. It's a respectable attempt, but something essential is missing.
