The question of what shaped Hannibal into the monster he became is explored in this film. Director Peter Webber and author Thomas Harris present us with Hannibal Lector (born Lecter), detailing his early life. Initially, it’s clear that this isn't a horror movie, which has frustrated some viewers who anticipated something else entirely. It’s unfortunate because the result is a very strong thriller, full of intelligence drawn from the source material and featuring solid acting. While there are disturbing events depicted—events rooted in historical fact—they don't fully deliver the kind of scares one might expect. However, it falls short for those invested in the Hannibal franchise, as well as general horror enthusiasts. The promotional campaign didn’t do any favors, suggesting a story about the beginning of his cannibalistic tendencies; therefore, audiences were surprised to discover that Hannibal was once just an ordinary boy, even relatable. When the movie shifts into a revenge-driven thriller, it doesn't have the emotional impact it should, because the script spreads itself too thin and doesn’t coalesce into something satisfying. The technical aspects are well done, helping to elevate the film above mediocrity, but a sense of wasted potential and flawed writing lingers as the credits finish up. 6/10
