I remember watching this movie when I was younger, and it consistently brought a smile to my face. Oliver Reed portrays the central character, a WWII prisoner of war who works at a Munich zoo tending to "Lucy." She isn’t a beautiful woman – she's an elephant, and a rather difficult one. As Allied forces approach, plans are made to move "Lucy" to Austria, but when a military officer takes over their train, they opt to travel on foot—the elephant, accompanied by two soldiers as guards and a cook. Their journey involves amusing adventures, with Reed performing well as the stubborn man determined to get himself and his companion safely to Switzerland. Wolfgang Preiss is fairly convincing in the role of his pursuing Nazi antagonist "von Haller," displaying just a touch of threat, while Michael J. Pollard delivers some genuinely funny moments as an escaping American soldier named "Packy" who occasionally engages in acts of sabotage. Beyond the pleasant humor, I also recalled the orchestral music composed by Francis Lai—a distinctive and charming melody that, during their trek through picturesque German landscapes, establishes a pleasing atmosphere. It's an enjoyable film, a more engaging and uplifting wartime movie that achieves precisely what it intended to do.
