The combination of intense feelings and consuming obsessions can have devastating consequences. This narrative centers on George Harvey Bone, who lived at number 12, Hangover Square in London S.W. during the early Twentieth Century. He’s listed as a Distinguished Gentleman in the British Catalogue Of Music... Just one year after producer Robert Bassler, writer Barré Lyndon, director John Brahm and stars George Sanders and Laird Cregar delivered the excellent and atmospheric The Lodger, they reunited for this free adaptation of Patrick Hamilton's novel. Hamilton is known for giving us Angel Street (which became Gaslight) and Rope’s End (adapted into Hitchcock’s experimental film Rope). Similar to The Lodger, Hangover Square unfolds as a thriller set in a foggy, dimly lit London. Cregar portrays Bone once again, playing a troubled character confused by his own mental state. This would be Cregar's final film before he died from a heart attack, likely caused by extreme dieting and stomach reduction surgery. He wouldn’t live to see Hangover Square released, which is especially regrettable given the critical praise that came with his chilling and touching performance. Viewing The Lodger and Hangover Square back-to-back highlights how much Cregar had grown as an actor; both films serve as a fitting tribute and a sad farewell. Joseph LaShelle (Laura) handled photography, and while he may not have been quite the same level as Lucien Ballard (who also worked on Laura), his depiction of London is just as atmospheric and essential to the unsettling story. Given that the film revolves around a tormented composer, it was inspired to get Bernard Herrmann to compose the score. He created the "Hangover Square Concerto" in only six weeks; Herrmann's music is appropriately dark and creates a powerful pairing with LaShelle’s gritty London setting. John Brahm’s direction is polished and features impressive camera work, especially considering the challenge of filming an elaborate indoor fire sequence (the largest ever at that time). Linda Darnell (those legs!), George Sanders, Glenn Langan, and Faye Marlowe all contribute to a first-rate production. Hangover Square tells a compelling story about passion, obsession, madness, and murder. 8/10
