Hamnet stands out as an exceptional piece of filmmaking, even though its deliberate pace and occasionally difficult nature might test some viewers. The effort is worthwhile, however. The movie explores how suffering can be devastating, while also highlighting art’s ability to offer a path toward healing or, at the very least, comprehension. Chloé Zhao has taken a gap in historical records—the story of an overlooked woman and the absence of a deceased child—and imbued it with a powerful feeling that speaks to creation's strength. It demonstrates that what is considered literature’s most profound sorrow originated from immense familial affection and remembrance. Rating: A-
